Why current?

2021-01-12 Politics in the U.S. state of Georgia are changing, as we have seen in two recent elections.  This will have a big impact on the political direction of the United States in the coming months and years.  In the November 2020 U.S. presidential election, voters in Georgia chose Democrat Joe Biden over the Republican incumbent, Donald Trump. He was the first Democratic presidential candidate to win in Georgia in 28 years.  Then, on January 6, 2021, two Democrats – Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock – beat the two Republicans, Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue, who were up for re-election for the U.S. Senate. Both of these elections were remarkable because they occurred in Georgia, a formerly solidly Republican state.  And they are considered significant because they have been instrumental in causing a power shift in Washington.  The Democratic Party, rather than the Republican Party, will soon be in control of both the presidency and the two houses of Congress. All of this was largely made possible by one woman: Stacey Abrams.  She was not on the ballot.  But she was the organizer behind the scenes, who helped get out the vote among people who, for a variety of reasons, had been unlikely to go to the polls.  Many of these voters were people of color.  Many were young.  And many voted Democrat.  For years, Abrams had done the hard work of knocking on doors in parts of the state where turn-out for elections was low.  She helped educate potential voters, got them registered, and organized community leaders.  She worked tirelessly to combat the spread of misinformation from the far right.  She fought to give a voice to people of color, the poor, and the young, empowering them to vote.  She led a dynamic movement that shattered barriers and ultimately swung some of the most consequential elections in a generation.

“Invention, discovery, and empires are built of chances taken with high degrees of failure.”

More about Stacey Abrams

  • Stacey Yvonne Abrams was born on December 9, 1973, in Madison, Wisconsin.
  • Abrams grew up with her parents and five siblings in Gulfport, Mississippi, and in Atlanta, Georgia.
  • She graduated as valedictorian (top of her class) from high school.  Then she attended Spelman College for her undergraduate work.  She continued on to the University of Texas, Austin, and got her law degree from Yale University.
  • Abrams was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 2007, where she served for 11 years.
  • In 2018, Abrams ran for governor of Georgia.  She made history as the first Black woman to become the gubernatorial candidate of a major political party.
  • Abrams lost the election by a narrow margin.  But she saw that the election had not been properly managed and that the votes of Black Georgians had not been fairly counted.  That was what inspired her to start the organization, Fair Fight, whose mission it is to empower disenfranchised people to make their voices heard at the ballot box.  The group also works to stop voter suppression, which has affected mostly people of color and young people.
  • Thanks in large part to Abrams’ efforts, Black voters showed up in record numbers for both the presidential election in November 2020 and the senatorial run-off elections in January 2021.  This was key to the success of Biden, Warnock, and Ossoff, and she was heralded as one of the most influential people in politics today.
  • President Elect Joe Biden said of Abrams, “Nobody, nobody in America has done more for the right to vote than Stacey.”
  • Abrams has said that she would like to run for president in 2040.  She predicts that she will win.  In 2022, she would like to run for governor of Georgia again.
  • Abrams says that the “New American Majority” is young, non-white, and progressive.  And she believes that for politicians to be successful in the future, they must make it a priority to listen to the concerns of these groups.
  • Abrams’ book about her fight to empower voters, called Our Time is Now, was released in June 2020.
